This time of year we read all kinds of tips about how to keep dogs safe at Thanksgiving. (No undercooked meat, not too much food, no bread dough, no cake batter, yada yada…) But nowhere have we seen this warning:

Keep your dog away from nails. Stainless, aluminum, roofing nails, brads, galvanized, rusty, you name it — nails are not good for dogs.

It’s something we wouldn’t have thought of, except for a Florida dog named Roxie. It seems this basset hound wolfed down more than 100 nails. Luckily, not one punctured anything vital, and a vet was able to remove them all. Roxie is now recovering, and is swearing probably swearing off the hard stuff for a while. The story unfolds on the video below. Enjoy! We’ll see you again this weekend.

The male stars of The Twilight Saga: New Moon are positively balmy for dogs. Yesterday we reported on Robert Pattinson’s desire to become a dog. And today, on the eve of the movie’s release, we find out that co-star Kellan Lutz’ dog is the world to him. “My dog is my life,” he said in an interview with Doggie Aficionado Magazine. He and his dog, Kola, are the cover stars of the winter edition.

Yesterday, on The Ellen Degeneres Show, Kellan melted the audience when he told of how he came to get Kola (who apparently scores more fan mail than most actors could ever hope for). He’d been through a painful breakup, was pretty new to Los Angeles, and wanted a friend.

The refreshing news is that he didn’t go hunting for a purebred. He wanted to adopt. He visited 12 shelters in pursuit of his soulmate dog. When found her, she was cowering in the back of the cage. “Dude, she’s polar,” he said the attendant warned. But there was something about her. The audience particularly liked the part when she buried her head between his legs (the dog, not Ellen). You can watch the interview below and see for yourself.

And if you just can’t get enough Kellan Lutz, below the Ellen segment we bring you a taped interview from the Doggie Aficianado photo shoot. Ironically it’s less about dogs than the Ellen interview. We’d like to know what he is doing with his right arm for the first half of the interview. It’s a little disconcerting.

Robert Pattinson would very much like to be a dog.

The Twilight Saga: New Moon actor feels a “deep connection” with dogs, reports Monsters and Critics. When asked what he’d become if he could truly transform from being human, he did not say a vampire. No, he said what any brilliant, wonderful person would say: “I think I’d be a dog…There’s a deep connection between me and dogs.” Since we are an all-dog staff, Robert has just shot up to be our number-one big-screen idol.

“The lifestyle of a dog has always fascinated me: You sleep, sit around, get stroked, eat and get walked from time to time. That’s great!” he said.

I hate to remind him, but the “eat” part of the equation often involves kibble. But far be it for me to discourage him, and we’re pretty sure he gets plenty of strokes as it is. What’s important is that this man, who is the reason many tween and teen girls get out of bed every morning, wants to be one of us. He wants four legs and a tail, and all the good stuff that comes with it.

A little sentence in a 12-page Vanity Fair spread about the star this month confirms his love of dogs: “All that he really wants is a home, so he can get a dog, since the West Highland white terrier he had since the age of five and ‘who was like my sister’ died last Christmas.”

And here’s further proof that he’s at one with dogs. The below video is apparently of him singing Stray Dog. It’s not really a video. It’s a picture, with him singing the song. Try as we might to find a video of him actually moving his lips and singing, we could not. Since we couldn’t understand most of the lyrics, we assume he truly was moving his lips. But maybe he sang this with his vampire teeth in. That’s always difficult. If it sounds more like he’s saying “Stray Door” than “Stray Dog,” you’re not alone.

Some people live for their 15 minutes of fame. Others could live without it. Four years ago, the wife of a soldier returning from five months in Afghanistan took a heartwarming video of their dog Gracie’s utter joy that her man, Lt. Andrew Schmidt, was finally home.

In April 2008 Schmidt posted the video on YouTube for friends and family to see. Until this week, it lay fairly dormant, with maybe 400 views. But suddenly it has gone viral, with nearly 600,000 views. This has left Schmidt feeling a bit shell-shocked.

“O-kaaaaay. This is getting crazy,” he wrote on the video’s home page yesterday. “They ran this on the Today show today. I’m not a public person … this is getting a little intimidating.”

Was Sabi's incredible reunion with his troops in Afghanistan the cause of Gracie's video going viral?

How did the video gain more than a half million viewers in a few days? Certainly the Today spot pushed it into high gear, but a day or two before it aired on Today, the video had somehow scored 30,000 views. We think it may have had a lot to do with people looking for the amazing story of Sabi, the bomb-sniffing dog who disappeared during a brutal gun battle in Afghanistan, and was found and returned to his unit 14 months later. Probably enough people did searches for “Afghanistan, soldier, dogs, reunion,” that the video was unearthed.

Schmidt, who is now a captain in the Air National Guard, is being redeployed to Afghanistan in the spring. He has a message for people: “I’m glad that this clip of Gracie has made so many people happy. If it makes you smile, it’s a good thing,” he wrote. “But please remember the men and women in Iraq and Afghanistan right now.”

We wonder if Pres. Obama has seen this video yet.

Otto, a 20-year-old dachshund-terrier mix from England, may be the heir apparent to the title of World’s Oldest Dog. But chances are that if Guinness World Record investigators confirm that Otto is indeed the crown wearer, he won’t sit in his throne for long. This is one active pup, for someone so ancient. He may be almost 21 in human years, but in dog years he’s 147. I want to know what’s in the water in Shropshire. Send me a sample, would you, old bloke?

Check out this short video on the old but spry man. He is admittedly very cute. I have to say that if I were pampered like he is, I would live a very long and happy life myself. But no one’s feeding me Sunday dinners every day of the week or letting me cozy up in bed beside them at 8 pm. I am forwarding this to my people. If they want me to live long and prosper, they’re going to have to start making some changes around the old abode…

(A big thank you to Zipper and his person Michael for sending us the link to this story. Zipper, you already live the life of Riley, whoever he was. Wish me luck with my quest to do the same. I am ready to retire the dog bed ASAP.)

Steve Martin wrote a catchy little song for his dog, Wally, and he thinks it needs a music video. The thing is he says he’s just a bit busy to make one himself, and doesn’t really know how anyway, so he’s looking for your help. (It may just be a ploy to get a lot of people to download his new song for 99 cents, but we’ll play the game.)

The official contest website states that since “Wally on the Run” is about Steve’s dog, your music video should have a dog (or many dogs) in it. We kind of figured as much. First prize: $1,000! Second prize: 99 cents, to cover the cost of the music download.

Here’s what you need to do:

1. Download the song “Wally on the Run” here

2. Make a music video for the song – remember, it has to feature dogs!

3. Join the Motionmaker program here

4. Upload your video to Dailymotion and add the video to this group

And that’s it! Official Terms & Conditions can be found here

The contest winner will be chosen by Steve! Contest ends December 1, so start filming soon!

We Dog Daily News staffers are going to try to get someone to film us, but frankly, we’re a rather unathletic bunch. Ida is a great runner, but Jarvis is far too proper to be caught running, Zulu expends all his energy being high strung, and I run a news blog, not a track.

Here’s one for the books. To your left is a dog who went through a terrible trauma, but never gave up hope of seeing her people. Her name is Ella. Ella, meet a lucky reader. Lucky reader, meet Ella.

Ella is a Rottweiler who surely has a touch of Good Dog, Carl in her. According to a CBS News story, she and her family were in a serious car accident in Tennessee. She was thrown from the car next to a busy highway. Rescue crews never saw her. For two weeks she survived next to the highway, which is a story in and of itself.

But where this gets really incredible is what Ella did while she scavenged for scraps of food and drank from a roadside drainage ditch. She gathered things. Not just any things, but things that had been thrown from her family’s car. A toothbrush. A candle. A razor. A comb. And a host of other reminiscences and scraps of a life and the people she missed so much.

“It was like she was sleeping with them (the objects) – or waiting with them,” Kathy Wilkes-Myers, the Love Me Tender animal rescuer who found Ella, told CBS. “That’s the last spot she saw her family, and she was going to stay there.”

When Kathy found Ella, it was 13 days into her ordeal. Ella was emaciated. But she didn’t act like countless dogs who are abandoned in the middle of nowhere. “I could just tell right away she was somebody’s baby. She just didn’t act like a stray dog to me,” said Kathy. It took a lot of detective work by Kathy to realize what had happened. We’ll cut to the chase. Thanks in part to the clues gathered by Ella, Kathy ended up finding Ella’s family, the Kellys.

Reunited! (Babies taste so good, don't they?) (Photo: CBS News)

The Kellys were thrilled, needless to say. They had given her up for dead. In an O. Henry-esque twist of fate, the family had moved, thinking Ella was no longer of this world. Sadly, they moved to a place that doesn’t allow dogs. The move is temporary, brought on by the accident and the expenses that came along with it, according to CBS.

But Ella will not be left out in the cold again. Kathy has agreed to take care of Ella for as long as it takes the Kellys to get on their feet and find a place that permits pooches.

Sigh…. This is the kind of story that makes us staffers proud to be dogs, and proud to be humans’ best friends.

Good dog, Ella. Good person, Kathy.

(Click here to see a video of the CBS News story. It’s a must-watch.)

We are hankering to give you another video today. That’s two days in a row for videos. It must be the influence of Jasper, our illiterate staff member. He is beside himself. “Finally, something I can sink my teeth into,” he gleefully exclaimed this morning when he saw we were fixing to show another video on Dog Daily News.

This video is spectacular. Our jaws are still on the floor. It’s a look at the formation of a deep and fast and lasting friendship between an orangutan named Surya, and a stray hound dog, who came to be known as Rosco. It’s almost like they knew each other in a past life (and that’s as esoteric as we get on Dog Daily News).

Dogs, get your people. People, get your dogs. This is one to be watched with a best friend at your side, if possible.
