Jump to CommentsBrit dog turns on griddle, starts house fire
What’s it all about, Alfie?
Alfie, a flat-coated retriever known for food thievery around his house in Wales, has a new entry on his growing criminal record: Arsonist.
Alfie sleeps in the kitchen. This is not the best place for a food snatcher, but we’re sure he appreciated his bed’s location. It seems he got the munchies in the middle of the night, and started nosing around for something to eat. During his explorations he somehow turned on the griddle attachment to the stove, which had a deep-fat fryer on top. You can see the results above.
According to the BBC, a smoke alarm alerted his family to the blaze, and everyone got out of the house unscathed. The house, alas, is uninhabitable without a kitchen and with smoke damage in other rooms, so they’re going to be finding other digs for a while. We’re happy to report that the arsonist will be at their side. (Sometimes we read about fires or disasters that dogs don’t even cause, and people ditch their dogs at a shelter because it’s more challenging to find places that rent to dogs. Very, very sad.)
His people say this is not the first time Alfie has accidentally knocked the knobs of cooking devices. But for everyone’s sake, we hope it’s the last time.
A word of advice for the family: Keep Alfie away from the kitchen at night.
And keep all matches, candles, and lanterns out of his reach.
Once that fascination with fire begins, there’s no telling where it will end…

This is hilarious. I’ve been following your blog for a month or so and I wanted to say thank you for always giving me something to look forward to online. After reading today’s, especially the photo captions, I had to write.
My dog Dave even seems to love your blog. I really enjoy your writing, and your dry but thoroughly enjoyable wit. I look forward to seeing much more of this in the future.
Your number 1 fans in Connecticut,
Angie and Dave

Alfie how could you? I love the shot of him contemplating the deed… he looks remorseful….but also like he’d probably do it again if given the chance. Great reporting Frank!

I think you hit the nail right on the head, Gabe. You are an astute fellow with your interpretation of facial expressions. You should be an artist.
Well look at that! I checked out your website, and you are an artist!. Great stuff! If you ever want to do a caricature of Zulu, I will display it with glee. (He’s very easy to make fun of.)

Thank you for you nice comments, Angie. You’re obviously a woman of impeccable taste. So’s Dave. Well, he’s not a woman. But he obviously is dog with a nose for a good story, as I am.
Looking forward to hearing more from you both in the future,
Frank
