Sweet Jasmine, one of the dogs rescued from Michael Vick’s vast dogfighting ring, has died after being hit by a car, a report in the Baltimore Sun says.
Sweet Jasmine rose to fame in late 2008 when she was chosen as the “cover girl” for Sports Illustrated’s fabulous story on Vick’s dogs. Writer Jim Gorant described her as “35 pounds of twitchy curiosity with a coat the color of fried chicken, a pink nose and brown eyes.”
We don’t know the details of Sweet Jasmine’s death, but we are terribly sad and sorry for this dear dog. If dogs could shed tears, we would. Sweet Jasmine — who by all accounts lived up to her name — had a tough life. And just when it was getting good, it ended.
But she lives on. Sweet Jasmine helped open people’s eyes to the horrors of dogfighting. She may have helped save countless other dogs from this fate. You can read a condolence note about Sweet Jasmine from Recycled Love, the Baltimore rescue group that took her in. Be sure to have a hankie handy.
