Martha Stewart knows what it’s like to lose a dog under traumatic circumstances. In March, her chow dog, Ghenghis Khan, died  in a propane explosion at a kennel.

She has advice for Jessica Simpson, who watched in horror Monday as a coyote absconded with her little Malti-Poo, Daisy. “Get another dog…it’s very important to get another dog, someone else to love,” Martha said in US Magazine today.

Martha also did a little gentle chiding: “She should have watched it more closely, though. She should have been more careful.”

Martha, you are right. It’s coyote country. Coyotes are so thrilled with the increasing popularity of tiny dogs (er, yes, three of our four staffers are tiny) that they probably have a banquet room with a candlelit table stocked with diminutive doggies as delicacies. But we don’t know the circumstances under which Daisy disappeared. It sounds like Jessica was right there with her dog. Coyotes didn’t get to be known as Wile E. for nothing. So let’s cut the singer some slack.

Jessica is not giving up. According to a tweet from last night: “Still holding out hope despite the a–holes that say is it a dumb thing to do. Daisy is my baby … why would I stop searching? I’m a mom.”
